The home:
Semi-detached rural property. Built in 1981 as an extension to the much older property next door. Roof tiled, cavity wall. Previously heated by coal fired Rayburn central heating.
Modifications:
Double glazing, EV charging point, loft insulation to 30cm+ throughout. Raised boards over half of roof area for storage using Loft Zone system (DIY). Heat pump, ground-source from borehole.
Motivations:
Climate conscience and needing to reduce carbon footprint. Also the advantage of a system that does not require fuel to be brought in which may be less easy as we get older.
Approximate costs:
The costs were Double glazing in 2011 approx £9,000. EV charge point in 2020 £600. Loft insulation replacement 2022, DIY plus £3,000 for materials.
Benefits:
Key excepted benefit is reduction of the carbon footprint of a country property at a height that is exposed to strong west winds.
